These weapons fire a projectile using a chemical propellant, causing a penetration wound. The propellent is usually explosive, but in some cases it is expended gradually for rocket-propelled ammunition. They are noisy, smelly, heavy and archaic, but they're reliable and they don't require any additional power supply, since the ammunition comes pre-packaged, each with its own little parcel of chemical propellent. Additionally, they are easily manufactured and maintained using low-tech facilities.
Guns of large calibre - 20mm and greater - may fire explosive, illumination, smoke, or gas rounds.
