Comments: I based these guys on 0.5mm steel sheet, which is easily cut with a standard pair of tin-snips. The corners were rounded by dragging them along a file, all up I guess each base took about a minute to prepare, which isn't really a great deal longer than I'd take cutting them out of card or plasticard. Possibly quicker then plasticard.
The reason for using steel is because I store and transport them on magnetic sheet, which I get from a local signwriter for about $20 a square metre. The magnetic sheet isn't super-powerful, but it's strong enough to keep these guys from moving around even in pretty bumpy circumstances, and it's cheap too.
