These are photo-reactive goggles, primarily used for welding or laser cutting (see Laser Torch) but also useful for EVA work or in any situation where the eyes may be at risk from bright light sources. The photosensitive response is very fast but not instantaneous; nevertheless it will reduce "dazzle time" substantially, and may even prevent it completely.

    Artificial Gill

This consists of a ribbed and vaned membrane which will extract oxygen from water passing over and through it. The oxygen is then passed through a constant-pressure valve to a mouthpiece. The membrane is normally worn as a bib covering the chest and abdomen, but it can also be incorporated into panels in a full body-suit.

    Camp Security Sensor

This is a sophisticated sensor which will detect heat sources, sound, motion, and can identify a reasonably wide range of shapes. The shape-detection is not good enough to distinguish individual humans, but it will acknowledge preset markers as authorized persons (e.g., Anyone wearing a yellow jacket, anyone with black hair, or anyone who speaks an appropriate identification code) and it can also distinguish any weapons or equipment which appear in its correspondence tables. The base unit displays its intruder identification on a display panel, but it can also be linked to an audio alarm. The unit is quite large and bulky; it comes packed in a shock-resistant case approximately 50cm x 50cm x 100cm and weighs 10kg. It can thus be carried easily by a single person, but its dimensions make it a somewhat awkward burden. Note: The base perception roll to "see" an intruder is 11-, modified by range and circumstances.

    Decontamination Spray

This is a convenient decontaminant foam which can be very useful in emergency situations. Though expensive, no engineering bay can afford to be without one.

The amount of material which can be decontaminated with the contents of one of these sprays is determined by the amount thrown on the Transform dice. This amount can be determined by referencing the Object BODY Table (p176, Hero 4th Ed.) in the "Unliving" column.

The spray will render inert any radioactive contaminants on the skin, but does not heal radiation damage.

    Digital Binoculars

Although image resolution through these binoculars is not as good as that of purely optical systems, the ability to zoom in on a target combined with digital image enhancement and ranging information makes them very useful indeed. The casing includes a small stabilizer, which helps to offset hand-shake at high magnifications.

    Energy Packs

Many types of equipment require a power source to operate. Some can be plugged into a large, permanent power source (such as a starship power grid or an apartment wall socket) but portable equipment needs portable power. This is where battery technology comes into its own.

The standard energy pack is a disposable item (though rechargeable packs can be obtained). It is an ovoid cylinder, approximately 10cm x 3cm x 1.5cm in dimension, and massing about 150gm. They are widely used to power anything from flashlights to hand-held plasma sprayers.

    Environment Cage

This is vital equipment for the big game collector or bounty hunter who wants to bring 'em back alive. In an emergency it can also be used as a survival pod, but the accomodations cannot be said to be comfortable. The cage includes feeding and waste elimination facilities, and a small autodoc unit. The unit consists of a disc 2 meters in diameter by 75cm thick which extends a cylindrical field up 2m to contain the environment. The field controls are in the rim of the base, but when used as a survival pod they can be accessed by means of a small remote which can be used within the field.

    Environmental Survival Kit

This kit includes a bunch of miscellaneous equipment to help one survive in the wilderness: things like fishing line, hooks, a utility knife, survival blanket, etc. The exact contents will vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer; they can be determined if and when necessary.

    Filter Pump

This small unit will filter out biological and chemical contaminants from a suspect water supply. It consists of a pair of bladders with the filter pump between them, contaminated water being loaded into one and clean water being passed through into the other. It uses an automatic cut-off which prevents any further liquid being passed through once the filter has reached its limit of usefulness.

The amount of water which can be processed before the filter is clogged will depend on the BODY thrown on the Transform dice. This amount can be determined by referencing the Object BODY Table (p176, Hero 4th Ed.) in the "Unliving" column (one litre of water weighs one kilogram). The BODY result should be taken to refer to the degree of contamination of the water source, so any further processing from that same source will use the same BODY total rolled for the first.

    Flight Pack

This gadget consists of a harness, controls, and backpack unit which includes the flight module and a battery. It is not particularly maneuverable or speedy, being capable of only 100kph, but it suffices for short-range transportation. The battery allows for just over three hours of flying time before requiring recharging. The unit will lift a total of 130kg, including itself.

    STR: 12 BODY: 5 SIZE: 1m x 0.5m (1/8 hex)
    DEF: 2DEX: 10 (DCV 3) SPD: 2
Move: 10" Flight (x8 non-combat), Reduced END: 1 END/minute, from END Reserve (below).
    Max. non-combat move = 160"/Turn = 13"/Segment, DCV = 7. It will take 8 Phases (4 Turns) to accelerate to maximum non-combat velocity.

    Survival Bubble

This is a soft-shelled survival bubble which can be inflated in a matter of moments. It includes an airlock for ingress/egress, and a small autodoc unit. The autodoc is not capable of surgery, but it will diagnose diseases and dispense the appropriate remedies where possible. It also includes an extensive first aid database for reference in self-treatment. The habitat will cater to up to eight occupants.

    Thermal Suit

This is just an electrically heated coverall. It is designed to be worn beneath weatherproof clothing.

    IR Vision Goggles

This eye-wear allows the user to see into the infra-red end of the spectrum, to pick up heat sources. They are very basic, with limited discrimination and do not allow tracking by heat-trails etc., but they do allow binocular vision so that the wearer can determine the placement of objects in three dimensions. The range of temperatures distinguished ranges from 0 degrees C. (black) to 100 degrees C. (white), in roughly 15-degree bands. Heat sources appear as blobs with different temperatures appearing brighter; a person appears as a vaguely person-shaped blob and a cow would appear as a cow/horse/really big dog-shaped blob.

    Page Top

IR Vision Goggles (the good ones)

These goggles are basically the same as those described above, except that the temperature range distinguished is wider and the display is more usefully weighted. Minus 20 degrees C. is black, and temperature is distinguished up to a white-point of 300 degrees C. along a weighted curve. The finest degree of discrimination is in the region 5 degrees C. to 55 degrees C. Outlines are much more sharply delineated than in the cheaper goggles above, and tracking is possible by heat trails.

    Laser Torch

This is primarily designed as a cutting tool, but it can also be used as a weapon at a pinch.

    Page Top

    Microscopic Goggles

These goggles are much used by surgeons, biochemists, minerallogists, or anyone else who needs to be able to see into the realm of the minute. The degree of magnification is variable, from 1:1 to 1:1,000,000.

    Monofilament Netting

This is a loose-weave net made from monofilament wires. The individual strands are so thin as to be virtually invisible, and the net can be set across passages or doorways to prevent entry. Anything which struggles when caught in the net will cut itself on the strands, as will anything which runs into a strung net. The strands will not, despite the lurid descriptions found elsewhere, automatically slice through anything, but they are definitely very dangerous to an unarmoured victim.

    Multi-Goggles

These goggles come in a variety of configurations. A typical pair is detailed below. Pricing will depend on the exact capabilities of a given set.

    Page Top

    Rations

Standard rations are universally bland, slimy and/or gritty, and make any real food they're eaten with taste of petroleum by-products. The synthi-coffee always tastes like soapy water, and the chocolate is always dry and crumbly. The little moist towelettes sting like fire in cuts and scratches, yet amazingly, have absolutely no effect on dirt or bacteria. Why? That's just the way things are.

    Page Top

    Respirator

This unit consists of two interlinked parts: a face piece which covers nose and mouth, and a filter which removes potentially harmful compounds from the atmosphere. It may be attached to a compressed air supply if the environment is particularly inimicable, but in such a case a proper environment suit is preferable since the respirator unit provides no eye or skin protection.

    Page Top

    Rocket Grapnel

This grapnel can be fired to entangle with projections on the surface being climbed, or even to embed itself in an appropriate surface. Its range is limited by the line being used to climb; a monofilament line provides the best performance, but requires special tools to climb on without damaging the climber.

    Scuba Suit

This is a low-friction, streamlined suit optimized for underwater work. It includes gill patches (see Artificial Gill), and it employs small hydrojets to push the wearer quickly through the water. The suit will resist high pressures when operating at great depths, and is insulated against the cold encountered there. Note: It is not a closed environment suit, and will not protect the wearer in vacuum or in poisonous environments.

    Page Top

    Stillsuit

A stillsuit collects water from the sweat and wastes of the wearer and pumps it through filters for re-ingestion. The pumps are operated by the body movement of the wearer, and require no external power source. It is normally used in desert environments where moisture retention is vital; a properly fitted stillsuit can reduce water loss to a negligible amount. A certain amount of knowledge is required to acheive best results; wearers should buy PS: Stillsuit Operation. (Lacking this, the bonus to Desert Survival shown below should be reduced to +2)

    Ultraviolet Vision Goggles

These goggles allow the wearer to see into the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. As long as there is some UV bathing the scene (from starlight, for example), the wearer can see as well at night as during the day, though colours cannot be distinguished. In interior situations, they can used in conjunction with a UV lamp to provide illumination.

    Ultraviolet Lamp

This item bathes an area in UV. It can most usefully be used in conjunction with the UV goggles detailed above, though it can also be used to get a nice tan, or to make your friends' teeth glow in the dark at parties.
