The saving throws for AD&D and OSRIC are normally split into five separate categories. However, under this Unified Saving Throw system, each character class has a single Saving Throw target number for their level, which may then be modified by high or low characteristics or some other circumstance.

For example, a character attempting to dodge a bolt from a crossbow trap might adjust their saving throw by adding or subtracting any DEX adjustment. The adjustment level for high or low characteristics is shown in the table to the right.

The Saving Throw target numbers for each character class are given below. To make a successful save, the player must roll equal to or above that number on a d20, including any die roll adjustments.
