The Way Out

Etching and aquatint

This is an etching and aquatint I did after seeing a photograph somebody took somewhere — maybe a building site or an old warehouse or something. The background aquatint was treated as a mezzotint; i.e. starting from a completely black base all highlights are scraped and burnished out on the plate. Aquatint doesn't give the same dense, rich blacks as a properly rocked mezzotint, but in this instance the kind of concretey texture is what I was after, and it worked reasonably well.
