Portable Mining Pulverizer ("Crumbler")

The Portable Ore Pulverizer, or "crumbler" as it is affectionately known, is a common mining tool. It comes in a variety of sizes, from massive tracked vehicular types to relatively small portable varieties, like this one. They all use a variation on tractor beam technology to rip and squeeze rock into gravel with a harmonic pulse of the beam. They all have a relatively short range, and the effect is greatest when the tip of the crumbler is immediately adjacent to its target.

The beam is unlike a laser or blaster beam because it reaches inside the target object (or person) and literally shakes and squeezes them to pieces from the inside. If used on hard, crystalline structures like rock, the result is a mass of dust and fine gravel. Metals suffer very rapid fatigue strains and break down into fragments. Fibrous and flexible matter like wood or bone first cracks, then splinters into shards. Flesh erupts into a mass of contusions as capillaries and veins are ruptured, and organs suffer internal haemorrhage and collapse.

The short range and bulky generator makes the crumbler generally unsuitable as a hand weapon, though they are widely used by military engineers as part of a suite of demolitions tools.

This version, the smallest and lightest available, consists of a bulky backpack generator and a two-handed emitter nozzle. The entire harness, including a battery adequate for twenty minutes of continuous operation, weighs a little over 40 kilograms.
